About Me

Hi -- I'm Julie. I'm a wife, a mama, a therapist, a friend, a sister, and a daughter.

Julie Stein

I have always been fascinated by mental health, our inner worlds, and exploring what makes us tick. We all have such unique combinations of traits, preferences, behaviors, and personalities shaped by our families of origin, friends, partners, co-workers, peers, and life experiences. This, in turn, influences how we interact with and respond to the world around us.

I believe that therapy can lead us to greater self-understanding and increase our ability to connect with ourselves and others in meaningful ways. This is especially true during challenging times. I believe strongly in the benefits of personal growth work to help us get unstuck, increase our awareness of repeated patterns (or “old tapes”), and make changes so that we can live more honestly, clearly, and fully.

My approach is supportive, direct, and clear. I use questions, humor, and stories to work with clients towards developing insight and understanding, slowing down, and listening to themselves more. (Learn more about my approach here.)

Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked in domestic and international HIV education for 20 years. In my various roles, I worked with people from various cultures and countries all over the world which taught me so much and helped to expand my worldview. I have worked as a case manager for people with HIV, a trainer for all types of health workers, and a therapist for underserved and under resourced communities. I am a cisgender straight white woman, and I am constantly examining my privileges and how they influence my work as a therapist. I feel honored to work with people from all different backgrounds and orientations.

The way we connect to others is how we connect to ourselves.
