Some memories do not stay in the past. A smell, a sound, a certain tone of voice - and suddenly you are back there, even though you know you are safe now.
Talking it through has not been enough, and that is not a failure on your part. EMDR works with how the brain actually stores a difficult memory, not just what you can say about it out loud.
This might be for you if:
- One event, or a string of them, still has a grip on you
- You have already talked about it in therapy and it has not moved
- Certain triggers - a place, a person, a date - still knock you off balance
- You want relief that does not require reliving every detail out loud
How EMDR helps:
- Uses guided eye movements (or taps) to help the brain reprocess a stuck memory
- Reduces the emotional charge of a memory
- Backed by research and widely used for trauma, anxiety, and hard-to-shake experiences
You do not have to keep carrying it the same way.
